Item description

Pre-Columbian Shaman Statue

Estimate: $1200-1450

Description: This large, finely made Mezo-American ceramic piece depicts a bulbous figure gripping their chin and bearing their teeth from appx 200 BCE-200CE. The horn, particularly associated with physical deformation, may suggest the figure is a shaman. The ceramic is burnished brown, with only decoration being upper arm jewelry or perhaps body modifications of sub-dural implants/ornaments. The ears are pierced for spools or rings. The hollow figurine held liquid, and was filled or emptied from the spout on the head. The black splotches are manganese dendrites, manganese oxide minerals on the surface of the ceramic from long exposure underground. West Mexico, Ameca style.

Origin: Jalisco, Mexico, 200 BCE-200 CE

Dimensions: Appx. 18" H x 12" W

Condition: Very Good. No damage or repairs noted.
