Bio: Marc Chagall was born Movsha (Moses) Shagal on 7 July 1887, into a poor family living on the fringes of the Russian empire. When he died 98 years later, he was the last surviving member of the School of Paris and a multimillionaire with a flat on the Isle St Louis in Paris and a villa in the south of France. Chagall was a French-Russian artist and early Modernist whose work anticipated the dream-like imagery of Surrealism through his fantastical, narrative paintings. Chagall was raised immersed in Jewish culture, and religious iconography, traditions, and folklore would permeate his work throughout his career.
