19th C. Cartes De Visites Albums

Estimate: $5400-$6800

Description: Four mid-19th century albums including 174 Cartes de Visites photographs. Album 1 has CdV photos of Abraham Lincoln, the majority of his cabinet and a number of Civil War Generals. Albums 2 and 3 contain various family members of some notable family living in the Washington D.C. area during and after the Civil War. Album 4 contains CdV photos of family relations in England spanning from 1858 to 1874. It includes several commercial CdV images of Venice, the Isle of Wight and France. Also are several CdV images of clipper vessels or Naval vessels. A number of CdV show members of the British Navy and Army. There are 3 CdV photos of Chinese ladies or children. One CdV shows a contortionist theater musician. Included is a single tin-type of a baby. These Cartes de Visites show a variety of high-end fashions as the members of the families were evidently significant members of society. None of the writings have been confirmed as actual signatures.

Condition: Overall general condition of the CdV photos is Good to Good++. Several CdV have period writing on them in either pencil or ink. None of the written names are actual signatures. Albums show considerable deterioration. Some (less than 10) CdV photos are water damaged or have other signs of damage or extreme wear.
