Item description

C. 1920s Noon Cannon with Sundial &Amp; Magnifier

Estimate: $700-$1000

Description: A brass Noon Gun, or signal sundial, by Abercrombie & Fitch Co., English, circa 1930. Cannon dials were popular throughout the 18th century. The magnifying glass would focus the sun's rays at noon and ignite a fuse on the cannon and thus fire the gun giving a signal for midday. All in the vicinity of the report would then be able to adjust their pocket watches to the correct time. This brass noon cannon has a magnifier, full sundial arc marked for months, hour, minutes. Constructed of solid brass with details carved or etched into the top of the sundial.

Condition: Wood platform has been split and repaired. All other components are intact and appear to function as intended. This item is sold as a static display that ignites powder only and is not intended for actual use. Before using as intended, a qualified gunsmith should examine the item.
