Item description

C.1855 Daguerreotype Photograph

Estimate: $150-$200
Description: This pre-Civil War Daguerreotype is nice, clear and extraordinarily clean. Size is  a 1/6 plate equal to 2.75" x 3.25". Subject is unknown but the image is clear and shows details in both the woman's and man's clothing. There is some tarnishing of the silver plate in the lower right that affects the details of the man's coat but is not generally detrimental to the image. Other slight silver tarnish aroundthe edges do not affect the image. The typical pressed "Union Case" is missing the cover half. The embossed details, showing a rose, are very crisp.
Dimensions: Case 3.5h X 3.0w, Photo 3.25" X 2.75"
Condition: The case is missing the cover.
Bio: Daguerreotypes (1840-1855) are on polished silver so they are very reflective, like a mirror. Since they are on silver and subject to tarnish, daguerreotypes were put behind glass and sealed with paper tape so air cannot tarnish the plate (there often is some tarnish around the edges of the picture). This was then put into a small hinged case, similar to a woman's compact.
